World Alzheimer’s Day is observed on the same fixed date every year: 21 September. It falls within World Alzheimer’s Month, which runs throughout September.
The 2026 theme is “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters”, set by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI). The campaign focuses on reducing diagnostic delays – a significant problem in the UK, where the average time from first symptoms to confirmed diagnosis is over two years. Early diagnosis enables people to access support, plan their care, and maintain independence for longer. ADI is calling on governments, health systems, and communities to invest in faster, more equitable diagnosis pathways. Use #WorldAlzheimersDay to share the message.
Why World Alzheimer’s Day Matters
More than 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80 per cent of those cases. In the UK alone, around 900,000 people have dementia – a figure projected to reach 1.6 million by 2040. Dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales.
Despite this scale, around two-thirds of people with dementia worldwide have not received a formal diagnosis. Without diagnosis, they cannot access medication, care planning, legal protections, or emotional support. The 2026 campaign makes the case that timely, accurate diagnosis is not a luxury – it is a right.
How Organisations Mark World Alzheimer’s Day
Alzheimer’s Disease International uses the day to release its annual World Alzheimer Report, an evidence-based publication on a priority theme – read widely by researchers, clinicians, and policymakers. National Alzheimer societies across more than 100 countries hold memory walks, public talks, and charity events. Landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and the London Eye have been lit purple – the colour of Alzheimer’s awareness – on 21 September.
In the UK, the Alzheimer’s Society runs campaigns, fundraisers, and educational events through September. NHS England and local Integrated Care Boards often co-ordinate dementia awareness activities with GP surgeries and memory clinics.
How to Get Involved
- Wear purple – the international colour of Alzheimer’s awareness – and display a purple ribbon to signal solidarity.
- Share the World Alzheimer Report published by ADI: it provides authoritative data for advocacy conversations.
- Join a memory walk – Alzheimer’s Society Walk events raise funds for research and support services.
- Talk to your GP – if you or someone you know has concerns about memory, early assessment is worth requesting. The 2026 theme is specifically about removing barriers to that conversation.
- Donate or volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK, or ADI.
- Make your workplace dementia-friendly – the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme provides free online awareness sessions.
What is World Alzheimer’s Day?
Organised by Alzheimer’s Disease International and recognised by the World Health Organization, World Alzheimer’s Day was launched in Edinburgh in 1994 to mark the 10th anniversary of ADI. The day is the focal point of World Alzheimer’s Month, a September-long campaign to challenge stigma, promote early detection, and support people living with dementia and their carers.
