What is International Men’s Day?

International Men’s Day recognises the positive contributions of men and boys and encourages constructive discussion of their wellbeing and experiences. Organisations use the day for community activities, learning, conversations and support for relevant charities.

For a workplace or school, a useful starting point is a specific purpose: recognising a contribution, improving access to support or examining a barrier people face. Explain that purpose so participants know what the activity is intended to achieve.

What is the International Men’s Day 2026 theme?

The international campaign’s 2026 announcement gives the theme as “The Future Is Everyone”. The UK campaign uses the standing theme “Supporting Men and Boys”.

The UK framework has three broad strands: improving wellbeing, supporting relevant charities and encouraging positive conversations about men and boys. An organiser can choose a suitable focus within that framework. A local activity’s own title is not necessarily the global annual theme.

When is International Men’s Day 2026?

The date is Thursday 19 November 2026. International Men’s Day stays on 19 November each year. The UK campaign website confirms the date and welcomes activities held around it as well as on the day itself.

It falls during Movember, the separate month-long charity campaign. If combining activities, make the organiser, purpose and any fundraising beneficiary clear.

Ideas for International Men’s Day at work

Recognise a specific contribution

Invite nominations for everyday contributions such as mentoring, supporting a colleague or helping a community project. Explain the selection process and ask permission before publishing someone’s name or story. Recognition can include different ages, backgrounds and roles.

Make support easier to use

Review whether staff can find confidential wellbeing and health information. A useful session can explain the routes already available and answer general questions about accessing them. It should not ask participants to disclose a diagnosis or personal concern in public.

Hold a focused conversation

Choose one topic and a suitable facilitator: for example, mentoring, caring responsibilities or asking for support at work. Give notice of the subject and offer a way to submit questions privately. Agree how the discussion will lead to a practical follow-up.

Support a clearly identified charity

If fundraising, check the charity’s current information and use its official donation route. State who benefits and make contributions optional. A general awareness event does not automatically raise money for either the International Men’s Day campaign or Movember.

Ideas for schools and community groups

Use age-appropriate examples of people contributing through care, creativity, learning or service. A class might discuss what makes a helpful mentor, or a community group could invite a speaker to describe a project and the lessons learned.

Avoid asking pupils to disclose family circumstances or to select a male relative as a condition of participation. Offer a broad range of examples and allow people to contribute in different ways. Any personal concern raised during an activity needs the setting’s normal safeguarding process.

A short planning checklist

  1. Define the purpose. State the topic and intended benefit in one sentence.
  2. Check the campaign identity. Use the correct global or UK theme and the actual event date.
  3. Prepare the audience. Explain the format, access arrangements and how questions will be handled.
  4. Verify resources. Use current information from the relevant charity or service.
  5. Follow through. Record any agreed action, owner and review date.

How did International Men’s Day begin?

The international campaign’s own account identifies Dr Jerome Teelucksingh’s observance in Trinidad and Tobago on 19 November 1999 as the foundation of the modern November event. Use that history separately from claims about earlier proposals or observances on other dates.

For current participation ideas and event information, use the UK campaign’s website. A calendar entry can help with planning, but a speaker’s availability, venue booking or local event needs its own confirmation.
