About National Magazine Day

National Magazine Day is a nationwide celebration of the joy, creativity and curiosity that magazines bring to readers of all ages. This year, we are putting children and schools at the heart of it.

In the run-up to 14 October, parents and carers across the country are invited to nominate their child’s school for a chance to receive a bundle of up to 250 children’s magazines, and one school will win a golden ticket: a £1,000 donation towards reading materials for their school library. Alongside the competition, with the support of some of the UK’s leading publishers including Immediate, Egmont, Future, Kennedy Publishing and DC Thomson, we aim to put thousands of magazines directly into the hands of young readers across the UK through our charity partners, sparking a love of reading for pleasure and showing just how fun and accessible magazines can be for children of all backgrounds and learning styles.

Magazines offer something for every reader. For children who find reading a challenge, they provide a warm and confidence-building route in: visual, approachable and easy to dip in and out of at their own pace. Whether it is igniting a passion for nature, sport, art or storytelling, there is a magazine out there for every child, and we would love your school to be part of the celebration.

What is National Magazine Day?

National Magazine Day is a dedicated day to champion magazines and the joy of reading them. It encourages people to pick up a familiar favourite, discover a title they have never tried, or share a much-loved issue with someone else. The aim is simple: to remind us how much magazines add to everyday life, and to keep that habit of reading alive across generations.

The enduring appeal of magazines

Magazines occupy a unique space in the media landscape, combining the immediacy of journalism with the craft of design, photography, and illustration across an extraordinary breadth of subjects, from news and nature to food, travel, fashion, culture, and titles created specifically for children and young people. While the way we read has changed, the appeal has not: print issues offer a considered, screen-free way to spend time with a subject, while digital editions, apps, and websites bring the same trusted voices to new audiences.

Why magazines matter

Magazines inform, entertain, and inspire. They support literacy and a love of reading, spark creativity and curiosity, and give a platform to the writers, illustrators, photographers, editors, and designers whose work brings each issue to life. Beyond the page, they build community, connecting people who share a passion and offering a trusted, edited alternative in a crowded information landscape.

How to get involved

National Magazine Day is for everyone, and there are plenty of ways to take part:

  • Readers: pick up a magazine you love, or try a title you have never read before, and treat yourself to a subscription.
  • Parents and families: introduce a child or young person to a magazine to encourage reading for pleasure, and make time to read together.
  • Teachers and schools: bring magazines into the classroom or library, use them to spark discussion, and celebrate the day as part of wider reading and literacy activities.
  • Libraries: showcase your magazine collection, host a reading corner, or run a recommendation display.
  • Publishers and the trade: shine a light on your titles and the people who make them, and join the wider conversation about the future of the medium.

When is National Magazine Day?

National Magazine Day is held on 14 October 2026. As an annual celebration, it offers a yearly moment to come back to the magazines you love and to discover something new.
