National Nutrition Month in the USA is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

The campaign has actually been around for a long time, first starting as an awareness week in 1973 becoming an awareness month in 1980, such was the interest and support.

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, also celebrated in March, increases awareness of registered dietitian nutritionists as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services and recognizes RDNs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives.

Obviously healthy eating is important no matter what our age, race, gender or religion yet is probably something that we do not pay enough attention to, take short cuts and are blissfully ignorant about the damage we could potentially be doing to ourselves and the environment.

Every year the campaign has a theme with dedicated websites containing masses of information, downloadable posters, info-graphics, recipes, tip sheets and facts. This makes it exceptionally easy for us to become more informed and participate in raising awareness of the importance of National Nutrition Month.

A campaign that is nationally recognised there are many ways you can become involved. Many of your local health care providers, community centres, schools and libraries will have information about events. Ways in which you could become involved are:

Promote the campaign by putting up the poster etc that can be found on the website
Arrange a cooking demo with local health eating experts.
Organize food donation in your community
Plan with your family to try new nutritional foods or recipes.
Start a school or workplace vegetable patch.
Organise a healthy recipe contest.

Get involved and see if you can implement some life long improvements to your diet over the course of this month.
