World Heart Day is observed on the same fixed date every year: 29 September, established by the World Heart Federation.
The 2027 theme has not yet been announced by the World Heart Federation. In 2026, the campaign “Don’t Miss a Beat” urged people to prioritise consistent heart monitoring, not skip warning signs, and make use of digital tools (wearables, apps) for cardiac risk tracking. Why World Heart Day Matters
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) – including heart disease and stroke – are the world’s leading cause of death, responsible for approximately 20 million deaths annually according to the World Heart Federation. In the UK, heart and circulatory diseases cause around 170,000 deaths a year and affect 7.6 million people.
The majority of CVD deaths are preventable through lifestyle changes, regular monitoring, and timely treatment. Yet awareness of personal cardiovascular risk remains low. World Heart Day is the world’s biggest platform for raising that awareness and driving behaviour change at both the individual and policy level.
How Organisations Mark World Heart Day
The World Heart Federation co-ordinates a global programme of events: community walks, workplace wellness challenges, public screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol, and digital campaigns. National cardiac charities – including the British Heart Foundation in the UK – use the day to publish research, lobby for policy change, and engage their supporter communities. Landmarks worldwide are lit red on 29 September.
In the UK, the British Heart Foundation typically runs campaigns around healthy eating, exercise, and heart health checks, and many GP surgeries and pharmacies offer opportunistic blood pressure checks on the day.
How to Get Involved
- Get your blood pressure checked – many pharmacies offer free checks. High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for heart disease and is largely symptom-free.
- Know your numbers – aim to understand your blood pressure, cholesterol, and BMI and what they mean for your cardiac risk.
- Move more – even a brisk 30-minute walk on the day makes a start. The BHF recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
- Donate to the British Heart Foundation – the leading UK funder of cardiovascular research.
- Spread the word – share heart health facts using #WorldHeartDay and #DontMissABeat.
What is World Heart Day?
World Heart Day is an annual global observance co-ordinated by the World Heart Federation (WHF), a Geneva-based federation of more than 200 member organisations in over 100 countries. Established in 2000, it is the world’s largest cardiovascular health awareness campaign, bringing together governments, healthcare providers, and communities to tackle CVD through education, advocacy, and action.
