About World Rhino Day
World Rhino Day falls on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. Observed every year on 22 September, it unites conservation organisations, wildlife parks, and individuals around the world in support of all five rhino species, four of which are threatened with extinction.
The day was first proposed by WWF-South Africa in 2010 and has been observed internationally since 2011. It is now coordinated by the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), which describes it as “a day of awareness for all five rhino species and the work being done to save them.”

The 2026 Theme: Building a Future for Rhinos
The theme for World Rhino Day 2026 is “Building a Future for Rhinos,” reflecting the long-term effort required to restore rhino populations and the wild habitats they depend on. The International Rhino Foundation is calling on supporters worldwide to raise awareness, share conservation updates, and fund the ground-level rangers and monitors who keep rhinos safe every day.
Why It Matters: The State of the World’s Rhinos
Roughly 26,700 rhinos survive globally, split unevenly across five species:
- Southern white rhino: around 16,000 individuals, the most numerous species, found mainly in southern Africa
- Black rhino: roughly 6,300, largely across southern and eastern Africa
- Greater one-horned (Indian) rhino: just over 4,000, mainly in India and Nepal
- Javan rhino: fewer than 100, confined to a single protected area in Indonesia
- Sumatran rhino: an estimated 34 to 47 individuals, making it one of the rarest large mammals on Earth
There are reasons for cautious optimism. Poaching in Africa fell to 516 incidents in 2024, the lowest figure recorded since 2011, according to the IUCN. In Kenya, intensive protection supported by WWF-UK has helped black rhino numbers climb from fewer than 400 in the 1980s to more than 1,000 today. That recovery is fragile: drought and habitat loss continue to threaten populations even where poaching is under control.
How UK Organisations Mark the Day
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, home to both southern white rhinos in the Africa zone and greater one-horned rhinos in its Rhinos of Nepal habitat, holds a World Rhino Day weekend with keeper talks at both rhino enclosures. In 2026, Q&As, quizzes, and arts and crafts sessions run from 10:30 to 16:30, included in the standard zoo ticket or membership. Keeper talks are at 11:30 for the greater one-horned rhino and 15:30 for the white rhino.
Chester Zoo, which supports rhino conservation programmes in Africa and Asia through the Chester Zoo Wildlife Fund, runs educational programming and keeper insights around the date each year.
Schools can use World Rhino Day to connect conservation science to geography and biology lessons, exploring how habitat protection, anti-poaching legislation, and international cooperation combine to pull a species back from the edge of extinction.
How to Get Involved
- Adopt a rhino through WWF-UK or the International Rhino Foundation to fund ranger training and anti-poaching patrols
- Visit Whipsnade Zoo on or around 22 September for the keeper talks and family activities
- Share the story on social media using the hashtag #WorldRhinoDay
- Fundraise by running a quiz night, sponsored walk, or dress-up day at school or work, donating proceeds to the IRF or WWF
- Donate directly to the International Rhino Foundation to support field conservation programmes in Africa and Asia
