About Art Gallery Day
Art Gallery Day is celebrated annually on 15 August. Founded in 2026 by Alain Horoit, the day honours the galleries and gallerists who play an essential yet often overlooked role in the careers of visual artists, and invites the public to show their appreciation in the simplest way possible: by walking through a gallery’s doors.
What is Art Gallery Day?
Every great artist needs someone willing to believe before everyone else does. Very often, that someone is a gallerist.
Galleries do far more than hang art on walls. They discover talent before it is recognised. They take risks on artists before there is demand. They invest their time, space, reputation and resources in building careers. They introduce artists to collectors, create exhibitions, open doors to new markets and help transform artistic talent into a sustainable profession.
Artists sign the artwork. But behind many of those signatures is a gallery that believed in them first.
Art Gallery Day gives galleries and gallerists around the world something they have long deserved: a day of their own. Because without artists, there is no art. And without galleries, much of that art might never be seen.
How to get involved
The message of the day is simple: GO TO A GALLERY.
- Visit a local gallery on 15 August, whether it is a long-established space or a new independent one, and take the time to look.
- Thank a gallerist who has supported an artist you admire, in person or online.
- Galleries can mark the day with open doors, artist talks, special viewings or a behind-the-scenes look at how they support the artists they represent.
- Artists can share the story of the gallery that first believed in them.
- Share your visit on social media and follow the campaign on Facebook.
When is Art Gallery Day?
Art Gallery Day takes place every year on 15 August. The next Art Gallery Day is Sunday 15 August 2027. The day is celebrated internationally, wherever there are galleries and the people who run them.
