For schools: assembly, classroom and PTA ideas
British Science Week is usually owned by the science lead or head of science, with support from the STEM ambassador coordinator and the DT and computing teams. It runs for ten days in March, so download the free activity packs in January, apply for a Kick Start grant by the autumn deadline if you are eligible, and book any STEM ambassador visits before February half term.
- Assembly: a live demonstration assembly (elephant toothpaste, a giant air cannon or a Van de Graaff generator) with the science lead explaining the science in one minute.
- Assembly: invite a STEM ambassador, local engineer or NHS scientist to talk about their job and answer pupil questions.
- Classroom: the activity packs for early years, primary and secondary, which include experiments that use everyday materials.
- Classroom: enter the annual poster competition, with the theme announced by the British Science Association each year.
- Whole school: a science fair where each class or tutor group presents an investigation to parents at the end of the week.
- Whole school: a “science in unexpected places” trail with experiments in the canteen, playground and sports hall.
- Parents and PTA: a family science evening run with the PTA, with parents who work in STEM hosting hands-on tables.
- Fundraising: a sponsored “build a bridge” or egg drop challenge with a small entry fee to fund new science equipment.
