International Men’s Day 2026 falls on Thursday 19 November. This year’s theme, “The Future Is Everyone,” was announced by the International Men’s Day organisation in early 2026. It shifts the focus from what men face alone to how society benefits when men’s health, relationships, and wellbeing are genuinely supported: the argument being that better outcomes for men create better outcomes for the families, communities and institutions around them.

In the UK, International Men’s Day has grown substantially in visibility over the past decade. Organisations including the Mental Health Foundation, the NHS, universities and large employers now mark the day with campaigns, talks and signposting to support services. Men account for around three quarters of all suicide deaths in the UK – a statistic that the day consistently puts at the centre of its messaging.

What is International Men’s Day?

International Men’s Day is an annual observance celebrating the positive contributions men make to society, families and communities, while drawing attention to issues that affect men’s health and wellbeing. It was inaugurated on 19 November 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh in Trinidad and Tobago, who chose the date to honour his father’s birthday. The observance is now recognised in more than 80 countries.

The day has six core pillars: positive male role models; celebrating men’s contributions; a focus on men’s health and wellbeing; highlighting discrimination against men and boys; improving gender relations; and creating a safer, better world. In the UK context, workplace mental health, fatherhood, men’s cancer awareness (prostate, testicular) and the male suicide rate tend to dominate the conversation.

How to mark International Men’s Day in workplaces and schools

  • Workplaces: host a lunch-and-learn session on men’s mental health, run by your Employee Assistance Programme or an external speaker such as the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).
  • Workplaces: share signposting to men’s health resources on your intranet – the Men’s Health Forum publishes free guides on mental health, heart health and cancer screening.
  • Workplaces: check whether male employees are taking up their entitlement to health checks, GP appointments and mental health support – low uptake among men is well documented.
  • Schools: a form-time discussion on what it means to be a positive role model, using the 2026 theme “The Future Is Everyone.”
  • Schools: invite male figures from the local community – coaches, healthcare workers, carers – to speak about their work and why they do it.
  • Communities: organise a men’s health event with a local GP surgery, covering the most common health risks that men present late or not at all.

Key facts about men’s health in the UK

  • Men in the UK die on average 3.7 years younger than women (ONS data).
  • Around 75% of all suicide deaths in the UK are men. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50.
  • Men are significantly less likely than women to visit their GP, attend cancer screening, or seek help for mental health difficulties.
  • Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in UK men, with around 52,000 new cases per year.

History of International Men’s Day

Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh launched International Men’s Day in 1999 specifically to counterbalance a gap he identified: while International Women’s Day (8 March) had been observed since the early 20th century, there was no equivalent global day focused on men’s wellbeing. The choice of 19 November was personal – it is his father’s birthday. The day grew steadily, gaining support from the United Nations, national governments and health organisations through the 2000s and 2010s.
