About World Animal Day

The date is fixed: World Animal Day always falls on 4 October, the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology.

2026 Theme: Great or Small, Love Them All

The 2026 theme, announced by Naturewatch Foundation – the UK charity that coordinates World Animal Day globally – is “Great or Small, Love Them All”. It celebrates every animal regardless of size, from bees and beetles to whales and elephants, and the equal claim each has to respectful treatment. Naturewatch is encouraging participants to spotlight a locally overlooked or under-celebrated species this October.

Why Animal Welfare Matters

Animal welfare affects billions of lives. The RSPCA responds to more than 1 million calls about animals in distress each year in England and Wales, rescuing over 100,000 animals annually. Globally, more than 70 billion land animals are raised for food each year, the majority in intensive systems that restrict natural behaviour – a scale of concern that World Animal Day invites both individuals and governments to address.

The observance covers every type of welfare issue: companion animal neglect, farm animal standards, wildlife conservation, exotic pet trading, and the welfare of working animals worldwide.

How Organisations Mark the Day in the UK

World Animal Day prompts annual campaigns from several of the UK’s largest animal charities:

  • RSPCA highlights rescue stories and encourages the public to report suspected cruelty via its 24-hour cruelty line (0300 1234 999).
  • Dogs Trust and Cats Protection promote adoption, with some centres running special open days and reduced rehoming fees throughout October.
  • PDSA focuses on responsible pet ownership and preventive veterinary care, sharing advice on affordable pet health checks.
  • World Animal Protection UK uses the day to press food retailers and hospitality businesses to improve farm animal sourcing standards.

Getting Involved

  • Adopt, don’t shop: Contact your local rescue centre. The World Animal Day events directory also lists registered activities in your area.
  • Volunteer: Most animal shelters need help with dog walking, cat socialising, fostering, or fundraising. Contact your nearest centre to ask what is needed.
  • Give to a cause you believe in: Whether it is wildlife conservation, farm animal welfare, or companion animal rescue, a donation makes a direct difference.
  • Try a plant-based meal: Choosing a meat-free lunch or dinner on 4 October is a simple way to reduce demand on intensive farming.
  • Take it into schools: World Animal Day is widely used in primary and secondary schools as a starting point for topics covering ecology, endangered species, and animal behaviour.

History

World Animal Day was founded in 1931 at a congress of ecologists held in Florence, Italy. The date of 4 October was chosen to coincide with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi – the thirteenth-century friar whose writings celebrated the kinship between humans and the natural world. The original focus was on endangered species, but over subsequent decades the scope expanded to cover all animal welfare concerns.

Naturewatch Foundation, a UK charity established in 1991 and based in Cheltenham, took on the global coordination of World Animal Day in 2003. Under its stewardship the observance has grown to registered events in more than 110 countries.

Frequently asked questions

Who organises World Animal Day?

World Animal Day is coordinated by Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-registered animal welfare charity. Organisations anywhere in the world can register their own event on the World Animal Day website free of charge.

Is World Animal Day the same as National Pet Day?

No. National Pet Day (11 April in the UK) focuses specifically on companion animals and pet adoption. World Animal Day covers all animals: wild, farmed, marine, and domestic.

What happened on the very first World Animal Day?

The first formal observance took place in Florence, Italy, on 4 October 1931, at an international congress of ecologists. Attendees called for greater protection of species then facing extinction – setting a precedent for the annual global campaign that now reaches every continent.

How can schools participate?

Schools can invite a local rescue centre to give a talk, set a project on an endangered UK species such as the hedgehog, red squirrel, or water vole, or run a class fundraiser for an animal charity of the pupils’ choosing. Naturewatch Foundation produces free educational resources available through its website.
