About World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2026

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day takes place on Saturday 10 October 2026. Observed on the second Saturday of October each year, it is a global moment to raise awareness of hospice and palliative care, to advocate for universal access to these services, and to recognise the millions of patients and families who rely on compassionate end-of-life support.

2026 Theme: Pain Management — An Essential Part of Palliative Care

The 2026 theme chosen by the World Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA) is “Pain Management: An Essential Part of Palliative Care.” The theme focuses on how palliative care addresses pain comprehensively — not only physical pain but also psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. The WHPCA highlights that these forms of pain are deeply interconnected, particularly for patients facing serious illness, and that truly holistic care must address all of them.

What Happens on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day?

Healthcare organisations, hospices, charities, and campaigners in over 120 countries take part in events ranging from candle-lighting ceremonies and community remembrance gatherings to webinars, fundraising walks, and social media campaigns. The WHPCA provides a global event map where organisations can register local activities. A campaign toolkit is available on the WHPCA website, including social media templates, a media release template, advocacy materials for contacting government representatives, and fundraising guidance. Participants are encouraged to share the message using the official hashtag #WHPCDay26.

Key Facts

  • The World Health Organisation estimates that over 40 million people require palliative care each year globally. Of those, only around 14% currently receive it — highlighting a significant and urgent gap in care provision worldwide.
  • Pain is the most commonly reported symptom among patients with serious illness, yet effective pain management remains out of reach for many. Access to opioid medicines and specialist palliative care services is severely limited in many low- and middle-income countries, leaving patients without adequate relief.

How to Get Involved

  • Register an event: Add your organisation’s activity to the official WHPCA world event map at thewhpca.org.
  • Use the campaign toolkit: Download social media graphics, press release templates, and advocacy materials from the WHPCA website.
  • Light a candle: Many organisations and individuals mark the day with a candle-lighting moment in memory of those who have received hospice or palliative care.
  • Advocate for access: Contact your local MP, MSP, MS, or MLA to call for improved access to palliative care services in your area.
  • Donate or volunteer: Support your local hospice or a national palliative care organisation with a donation, a gift of time, or a fundraising activity.
  • Share on social media: Post using #WHPCDay26 and encourage others to learn more about palliative and hospice care.

What is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day?

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day was first observed in 2005, founded by a global coalition of hospice and palliative care organisations that came together under what is now the World Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA). The WHPCA is a global network of national and regional hospice and palliative care associations working to ensure that everyone, regardless of diagnosis, age, location, or income, has access to quality palliative care.

Each year, the day focuses on a specific theme to guide international conversation and advocacy. Past themes have addressed universal access to palliative care, equity in care provision, and the rights of the dying. The 2026 theme — pain management — reflects a recognition that uncontrolled pain remains one of the greatest barriers to dignity at the end of life, and that addressing it must be central to any serious commitment to palliative care.

Palliative care is not only for the final days of life. It can be provided alongside curative treatment at any stage of a serious illness, helping patients and families manage symptoms, navigate difficult decisions, and maintain as much quality of life as possible.
