About Friends Day
Friends Day, known across Latin America as Dia del Amigo, falls on Monday, 20 July 2026. It is a day for marking the people who matter most outside of family, with friends gathering over food and drinks to celebrate their bonds. It is observed most enthusiastically in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Spain, where it ranks among the busiest social nights of the year.
How to Celebrate Friends Day
This is a day built around getting together, so the best way to mark it is to make plans with the people you value most.
- Book a table early – In Argentina, restaurants and bars are famously full on 20 July, with reservations selling out days ahead. If you want to dine out, book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
- Host an asado or shared meal – A relaxed barbecue or pot-luck dinner at home is the classic way friends mark the occasion. It keeps the focus on conversation rather than a packed venue.
- Send a message to old friends – Reach out to someone you have lost touch with. A short note or call to a friend you have not spoken to in a while can be the most meaningful gesture of the day.
- Organise a group outing – Plan something active such as a walk, a football match or a trip to a local landmark. Shared experiences tend to strengthen friendships more than gifts.
- Give a small token – Symbolic gifts are common, from a handwritten card to a small present that nods to a shared joke or memory.
- Throw a friends-only gathering – Unlike celebrations centred on couples or family, this day is squarely about friendship, so a casual get-together with your wider circle fits the spirit perfectly.
- Share a memory online – Post a favourite photo of you and your friends and tag them. Many people use the day to look back on years of shared history.
- Make a new friend – The day grew out of a wish to build connection between strangers, so striking up a conversation with someone new sits right at the heart of it.
What is Friends Day?
Friends Day is an annual celebration of friendship held on 20 July. It honours the companionship, loyalty and support that friends provide, separate from family or romantic relationships. While it is observed informally in many places, it carries the most cultural weight in Argentina, where it is woven into the national calendar, and in neighbouring countries including Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Spain. The day is marked privately rather than through official ceremonies, with people taking the initiative to reach out and gather.
When is Friends Day?
Friends Day takes place on Monday, 20 July 2026. The date is fixed and falls on the same day every year, chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing. It should not be confused with the United Nations International Day of Friendship, which is marked separately on 30 July each year.
The History of Friends Day
The 20 July date traces back to Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, an Argentine dentist, psychologist, teacher and musician from Lomas de Zamora. On 20 July 1969, Febbraro watched the Apollo 11 crew land on the Moon and saw the moment as a gesture of friendship from humanity towards the universe. He reasoned that if people could reach the Moon together, they could surely build stronger bonds with one another on Earth. He later wrote that “a people of friends would be an invincible nation”.
Moved by the idea, Febbraro wrote and sent around 1,000 letters to people in more than 100 countries, proposing that 20 July be recognised as a day dedicated to friendship. He received roughly 700 replies in return, and the idea began to take hold. The date was formally recognised in Argentina by decree in 1979, cementing 20 July as Dia del Amigo.
The concept of celebrating friendship in the region predates Febbraro’s campaign. In 1958, Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho proposed a World Friendship Crusade in Paraguay, an early effort to promote friendship as a force for peace. Over the decades the 20 July celebration spread from Argentina to Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Spain, growing from a heartfelt proposal into one of the most widely observed social occasions of the year in those countries.

Why Friends Day Matters
Friendship has a measurable effect on wellbeing, with strong social connections linked to better mental and physical health and a greater sense of belonging. Friends Day offers a simple, joyful prompt to nurture those relationships rather than take them for granted. By setting aside a day to gather, reconnect and say thank you, it helps keep friendships alive across the busy stretches of ordinary life.
