About Andorra – Our Lady of Meritxell Day

Our Lady of Meritxell Day is the national day of Andorra, observed every year on 8 September. It honours Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of the principality, and combines a deeply rooted Catholic feast with Andorra’s most important civic celebration. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday, 8 September, and is recognised as a public holiday across the country.

The Story Behind Our Lady of Meritxell Day

The origins of the day reach back to a legend set in the late twelfth century. According to tradition, villagers from the hamlet of Meritxell were walking to mass at the parish church of Canillo, in the north of Andorra, on a winter morning when they came across a wild rose in full bloom. Finding a flowering rose out of season was extraordinary, and as they gathered round they discovered a small statue of the Virgin Mary at its base.

The villagers carried the statue to a nearby church, but the next morning it was found back at the foot of the blooming rose. The same thing happened again after a second attempt to move it. Taking this as a sign, the people of Meritxell built a chapel on the very spot where the statue had appeared, and the image became an object of devotion that grew steadily over the centuries.

That devotion deepened through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and became intertwined with a growing sense of Andorran national identity. In 1873 the General Council, Andorra’s governing body, formally proclaimed Our Lady of Meritxell the patron saint of the valleys of Andorra. The feast of 8 September, already significant in the Catholic calendar as the Nativity of Mary, was adopted as the country’s national day, binding faith and nationhood together in a single celebration.

When and Where is Our Lady of Meritxell Day Celebrated?

The day is celebrated throughout Andorra on 8 September each year, with the heart of the observance at the Sanctuary of Meritxell near the village of Canillo. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday, 8 September. As both a religious feast and the official national day, it is marked by Andorrans of all backgrounds, and the date never changes from year to year.
