About Hari Malaysia

Hari Malaysia, known in English as Malaysia Day, is the national day that commemorates the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963. Observed annually on 16 September, it has been a nationwide public holiday since 2010 and is recognised by the Malaysian federal government. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, 16 September.

The Story Behind Hari Malaysia

Malaysia as a unified nation did not exist before 16 September 1963. On that date, the Federation of Malaya, which had gained its own independence in 1957, joined with the British crown colonies of North Borneo (later renamed Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore to form a single, larger federation under the name Malaysia. The union was made formal through the Malaysia Agreement, a constitutional document negotiated between Britain and the territories involved.

The road to that founding date was not straightforward. The new federation was originally planned to come into being on 1 June 1963, then rescheduled to 31 August 1963 so that it would coincide with the sixth anniversary of Hari Merdeka, the independence of Malaya. Objections from neighbouring Indonesia and the Philippines, both of which contested the legitimacy of the merger, prompted a United Nations assessment of opinion in the Borneo territories. The declaration was consequently delayed once more, this time to 16 September, the date that has been honoured ever since.

The federation’s early years were marked by change. Singapore separated from Malaysia on 9 August 1965 to become an independent republic, and as a result Malaysia Day is no longer observed there. For many years the date passed without official national recognition, with the spotlight falling instead on 31 August. That changed in 2009, when Prime Minister Najib Razak announced during a parliamentary session on 19 October that Malaysia Day would become a federal public holiday from 2010 onwards, giving long-overdue recognition to the moment the modern nation was actually born.

When and Where is Hari Malaysia Celebrated?

Hari Malaysia is observed every year on 16 September across all states and federal territories of Malaysia. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday, 16 September. The day carries particular significance in the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, where many people regard it as the country’s true national day, arguing that 31 August commemorates the independence of Malaya rather than the creation of Malaysia itself.

Traditions and Customs

Although Malaysia Day is younger as a public holiday than Merdeka Day, it has developed its own customs and is increasingly marked with the same patriotic spirit.

  • Flag displays – The Jalur Gemilang, the national flag, is flown from homes, vehicles, schools and public buildings throughout September, turning streets into a sea of red, white, blue and yellow.
  • Official ceremonies – State and federal leaders attend formal events, often rotating the main national celebration between different states to reflect the union of the peninsula and Borneo.
  • Cultural performances – Traditional dances such as the Malay zapin, Chinese lion dances and Indian bharatanatyam are staged to reflect the multicultural make-up of the country.
  • Parades and processions – Marching contingents, uniformed services and decorated floats move through major cities, celebrating national unity and the contributions of Sabah and Sarawak.
  • Patriotic broadcasts – Television and radio carry special programming, documentaries and the singing of the national anthem, Negaraku, throughout the day.

Ways to Celebrate Hari Malaysia

Whether you are in Malaysia or marking the day from abroad, there are many ways to take part.

  • Fly the Jalur Gemilang – Display the national flag at home or work to show pride in the union that created modern Malaysia.
  • Learn the history – Read about the 1963 Malaysia Agreement and the roles of Sabah and Sarawak, which are often overlooked in favour of the 1957 independence story.
  • Cook a Malaysian feast – Prepare dishes such as nasi lemak, satay or laksa, which bring together Malay, Chinese and Indian culinary traditions.
  • Attend a community event – Many Malaysian diaspora communities and embassies host gatherings, food fairs and cultural showcases around the world.
  • Support unity – Use the day to reflect on the multicultural and multireligious harmony that defines the nation.
  • Share on social media – Post messages of celebration and tag friends to help raise awareness of what 16 September actually represents.
