About Cyprus Independence Day
Cyprus Independence Day is the national holiday marking the island’s emergence as a sovereign republic, celebrated each year on 1 October. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday. The day commemorates the end of British colonial rule and the birth of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, and is observed with parades, ceremonies and national pride across the island.
The Story Behind Cyprus Independence Day
Cyprus came under British administration in 1878 and was formally annexed as a Crown colony in the early twentieth century. For decades, a large part of the island’s Greek Cypriot population sought “enosis”, or union with Greece, while the Turkish Cypriot community held very different aspirations. These competing visions shaped the long and often turbulent road to independence.
Tensions escalated in the 1950s. In 1955 the guerrilla campaign of EOKA, the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters, began with the aim of ending British rule and achieving union with Greece. The conflict continued for four years and drew in the wider interests of Britain, Greece and Turkey, making the future of Cyprus a matter of international negotiation rather than a purely local question.
A settlement was reached through the London and Zurich Agreements. Negotiations in Zurich in February 1959 between Greece and Turkey were followed by an agreement in London the same month involving the United Kingdom and the leaders of the two Cypriot communities, Archbishop Makarios III for the Greek Cypriots and Dr Fazil Kucuk for the Turkish Cypriots. On this basis a constitution was drafted alongside treaties of guarantee and alliance.
The Republic of Cyprus formally came into being on 16 August 1960, with Archbishop Makarios III as its first president and Dr Fazil Kucuk as vice president. Although independence was legally established in August, the official celebration was later moved to 1 October to avoid the height of the summer holiday season, and that is the date Cypriots mark today.
