History of Digital Nomad Day

Digital Nomad Day was established in 2020 by the team behind Rootless Living Magazine, a publication dedicated to the digital nomad lifestyle. The founders recognised that despite the rapid growth of location-independent working, there was no dedicated day to celebrate and bring visibility to this community.

The concept of the digital nomad, however, predates the formal observance by several decades. Technology entrepreneur and author Tim Ferriss popularised the concept in his 2007 book “The 4-Hour Workweek,” which introduced the idea of designing a lifestyle around remote work and travel to a mainstream audience. Earlier still, in 1983, Steve Roberts became one of the first widely recognised digital nomads, undertaking a cross-country journey across the United States whilst working on a computerised bicycle he called the Behemoth.

The term “digital nomad” itself is commonly attributed to Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners, who used it in their 1997 book of the same name, predicting a future in which miniaturised technology would enable people to work from anywhere in the world.
