About International Traffic Light Day

International Traffic Light Day is observed on 5 August each year, marking the anniversary of the installation of the world’s first electric traffic signal on 5 August 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio. The day commemorates one of the most important engineering innovations in modern history: a simple system of coloured lights that has saved millions of lives and made our roads vastly safer.

What is International Traffic Light Day?

International Traffic Light Day is an annual observance that celebrates the invention and continued importance of the traffic light. On 5 August 1914, the first electric traffic signal was installed at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. This moment marked the beginning of an era in which standardised traffic management would transform urban life and dramatically reduce road casualties.

The day encourages people to reflect on the role that traffic lights play in daily life, the engineering ingenuity behind their development, and the ongoing evolution of traffic management technology in the age of smart cities and autonomous vehicles.

When is International Traffic Light Day?

International Traffic Light Day is observed on 5 August every year, the date on which the first electric traffic signal was installed in 1914.

Why It Matters

Before traffic signals, busy road intersections were chaotic and extremely dangerous. Horse-drawn carriages, early motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians all competed for space with no systematic means of regulation. Accidents were frequent, and the rapidly growing number of motor vehicles on city streets in the early 20th century made the problem increasingly urgent.

The introduction of the electric traffic signal in 1914 provided a standardised, automated means of managing traffic flow. Following the implementation of traffic lights in Cleveland and their subsequent spread to other US cities, motor vehicle fatality rates in the United States declined by nearly 50 per cent by 1930. This is one of the most dramatic public safety improvements associated with a single technological innovation in the history of transport.

Today, traffic signals are ubiquitous in cities and towns around the world. Modern systems are computer-controlled, sensor-equipped, and increasingly integrated with smart city infrastructure to adapt in real time to traffic conditions. The humble traffic light remains as relevant as ever, now expanding into adaptive systems that communicate with connected vehicles and autonomous driving platforms.

How to Get Involved

  • Learn about the history of traffic engineering: The story of traffic signal development is a fascinating chapter in urban planning and engineering history.
  • Visit the site of the first traffic light: The corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio is where the first electric traffic signal stood in 1914.
  • Teach children road safety: Use International Traffic Light Day as an opportunity to discuss road safety with children, including the meaning of traffic light colours and pedestrian crossing rules.

History of the Traffic Light

The story of the traffic light begins not with electricity but with gas. In December 1868, a gas-powered traffic signal was installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London, designed by J.P. Knight, a railway signal engineer. It featured red and green lanterns operated manually by a police officer. Unfortunately, the device exploded just a month after installation when a gas leak ignited, injuring the officer on duty, and the experiment was abandoned.

The development of electric traffic lights in the early 20th century was driven by the explosive growth of the motor car. Several inventors contributed to the concept. Lester Wire, a police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah, is often credited with designing the first electric traffic signal, using red and green lights mounted on a wooden box. His design inspired the Cleveland installation of 5 August 1914, which was the world’s first functional electric traffic signal at a busy urban intersection.

In 1920, William Potts, a Detroit police officer, introduced the first four-way, three-colour traffic signal, adding amber as a transitional light. Garrett Morgan, a Black American inventor, patented a three-position traffic signal in 1923, which added a neutral stop position that allowed pedestrians and vehicles to clear the intersection safely before traffic resumed. Morgan’s design was foundational to the modern three-phase traffic signal system used worldwide today.

Noteworthy Facts

  • The world’s first electric traffic light was installed on 5 August 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street.
  • Following the introduction of traffic lights, motor vehicle fatality rates in the United States fell by nearly 50 per cent between 1914 and 1930.
  • Garrett Morgan, a Black American inventor, patented a three-position traffic signal in 1923, a design he later sold to General Electric for 40,000 US dollars.
  • The colours red, amber, and green were borrowed from the railway signalling system, which had used them for decades before they were adapted for road use.
  • There are an estimated 300,000 traffic signals in operation across the United States alone.
  • Modern adaptive traffic signal systems use sensors, cameras, and AI to adjust signal timing in real time, reducing average delays and improving traffic flow by up to 25 per cent.
