About Lady of Aparecida

The Lady of Aparecida, known in full as Our Lady of Aparecida, is the patron saint of Brazil, and her feast day falls on 12 October. It is a national public holiday across Brazil, marked with Masses, processions and pilgrimages to the world’s largest Marian shrine. The day honours a small, dark statue of the Virgin Mary pulled from a river more than three centuries ago, an image that has become one of the most venerated religious symbols in Latin America.

The Story Behind the Lady of Aparecida

The story begins early on the morning of 12 October 1717. Three fishermen, Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso and João Alves, set out on the Paraíba do Sul River near the town of Guaratinguetá. They had been told to provide fish for a visiting nobleman, but after hours of casting their nets they had caught nothing. On one final attempt they drew up not a fish but a small terracotta statue of the Virgin Mary, missing its head. A further cast brought up the head itself.

According to tradition, once the statue was aboard, the fishermen’s nets filled with an extraordinary catch. Over the following days they cleaned and reassembled the figure, and word of the miraculous discovery spread through the surrounding villages. The image was named Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida, meaning Our Lady of the Conception Who Appeared. Devotion grew rapidly as people began to report graces and miracles linked to the statue.

As the number of pilgrims swelled, chapels were built to house the image, each larger than the last. On 16 July 1930, Pope Pius XI formally declared Our Lady of Aparecida the principal patroness of Brazil. The connection between the saint and the nation deepened further when, on 30 June 1980, during Pope John Paul II’s first visit to the country, a federal law was signed making 12 October a national holiday in her honour. That same year, the pope granted the basilica that houses the image the title of minor basilica.
