What is Refugee Week for?

The festival creates opportunities to encounter art, stories, music and ideas by people who have sought safety, and to build connections between neighbours. Taking part can mean attending an existing event, reading a book, sharing a meal or organising something locally.

Counterpoints Arts describes Refugee Week as a platform where people can share their work and perspectives on their own terms. Let that guide the planning: invite people to contribute what they want to share, involve them in decisions, and recognise the time and expertise that an artist or speaker brings.

Refugee Week 2027 takes place in the UK from 14 to 20 June. It is an arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and experiences of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. The UK partnership project is coordinated by Counterpoints Arts, with events created by communities, schools, libraries, artists and organisations.

When is Refugee Week?

The organiser’s official channel confirms 14–20 June 2027. These are the UK festival dates. Countries with their own national Refugee Week programmes can use a different schedule, so check the appropriate organiser when planning outside the UK.

The week includes World Refugee Day on 20 June. Details of a 2027 theme were not verified at the time of this source check. Use the official festival channels for new announcements and resources.

Ideas for schools and libraries

  • Choose a thoughtful reading activity. Use age-appropriate books selected with teachers or librarians. Explore characters, language, belonging and welcome through discussion rather than asking pupils to disclose personal experiences.
  • Create a welcome project. Ask children what helps someone feel included in a new classroom or neighbourhood. Turn their suggestions into a useful class welcome guide or display.
  • Explore creative work. Introduce a poem, illustration or film by a refugee artist. Credit its creator and check any permission needed before reproducing work publicly.
  • Make space for conversation. Invite pupils to ask questions about a story and consider more than one perspective. Give children different ways to respond, including writing or drawing.

The National Literacy Trust’s Refugee Week resources provide teaching material and classroom activities. Its 2027 programme is in development, and its available earlier resources are clearly labelled by year. Select material appropriate for your pupils and adapt the session to your setting.

Ideas for workplaces and communities

Look for an existing event before creating a new one: a library exhibition, film screening, community meal or local arts programme may welcome an audience or practical help. A workplace reading group could discuss a book by a refugee writer, while a community venue might host a small exhibition in partnership with local artists.

If you organise a public event, make the invitation clear about cost, location, timings, language and access. Plan how contributors will be credited or paid, ask before sharing photographs, and offer ways to participate without speaking in front of a group. Begin with one achievable activity and leave time to listen to the people involved.
