About Alvin C. York Day

Alvin C. York Day is observed on 8 October each year in honour of Sergeant Alvin Cullum York, one of the most decorated American soldiers of the First World War. The date marks the anniversary of his extraordinary action in the Argonne Forest of France on 8 October 1918, for which he received the Medal of Honor. In Tennessee, where York was born and lived his whole life, the day is a moment to remember a reluctant warrior who became a national hero.

The Story Behind Alvin C. York Day

Alvin Cullum York was born on 13 December 1887 in a two-room log cabin near Pall Mall in Fentress County, Tennessee. He was the third of eleven children in a family that survived through subsistence farming, blacksmithing and hunting along the rugged Tennessee-Kentucky border. York grew up an exceptional marksman, a skill learned out of necessity in the hills of the Cumberland Plateau, and one that would later define the most famous moment of his life.

When the United States entered the First World War, York faced a profound dilemma. He belonged to the Church of Christ in Christian Union, a denomination that opposed violence, and on his 1917 draft registration he plainly wrote that he did not want to fight. His application for conscientious objector status was denied, and after long conversations with his commanding officers about scripture and duty, York reconciled his faith with military service. He sailed to France as a member of the 82nd Division and would soon find himself at the centre of one of the war’s most celebrated feats of arms.

On the morning of 8 October 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, York was part of a small detachment ordered to silence German machine gun positions that had pinned down his battalion. After the patrol came under heavy fire that killed six Americans and wounded three, York took charge. Using his marksmanship and remarkable composure, he silenced the machine gun nests one by one. By the end of the action he had helped kill at least 25 German soldiers, capture 132 prisoners and seize 35 machine guns. The German officer commanding the position reportedly emptied his pistol at York without landing a hit before surrendering.

York’s Distinguished Service Cross was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor following an investigation by his chain of command, and the award was presented in recognition of his gallantry. France honoured him with the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honour, and Italy and Montenegro added their own decorations. By the war’s end he had received close to 50 honours from several nations, and he returned to Tennessee in 1919 as a household name across the United States.

When and Where is Alvin C. York Day Celebrated?

Alvin C. York Day falls on Thursday, 8 October 2026. The date is fixed, marking the anniversary of York’s 1918 Argonne action rather than his birthday. The observance is strongest in Tennessee, particularly around Pall Mall and Jamestown in Fentress County, where York spent his life and where the Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park preserves his farm and gristmill. Veterans’ organisations, schools and history enthusiasts elsewhere in the United States also mark the day as a way of remembering American service in the First World War.
