About Caribbean Community Day

Caribbean Community Day, widely known as CARICOM Day, celebrates the founding of the Caribbean Community, the regional bloc that unites the nations and territories of the Caribbean. It commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, which established CARICOM on 4 July 1973. In several member states the public holiday is observed on the first Monday of July, and it stands as a celebration of regional cooperation, shared heritage, and a common Caribbean future.

The Story Behind Caribbean Community Day

The idea of Caribbean unity has deep roots. In the years following the Second World War, the islands of the English-speaking Caribbean experimented with forms of regional partnership, including the short-lived West Indies Federation of 1958 to 1962. When that federation dissolved, the appetite for cooperation did not disappear. Leaders recognised that small island economies stood to gain far more by acting together than apart, in trade, in diplomacy, and in pooling scarce resources.

This momentum led to the creation of the Caribbean Free Trade Association in 1965, which over the following years deepened into something more ambitious. On 4 July 1973, four Caribbean leaders signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas in Trinidad and Tobago, formally establishing the Caribbean Community and Common Market, known as CARICOM. The original signatories represented Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

From those four founding members, CARICOM has grown into a community spanning much of the region, encompassing independent nations and associate members across the Caribbean. The treaty was revised in 2001 to pave the way for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, deepening integration further. CARICOM Day grew out of a desire to mark this founding moment and to celebrate the bonds that tie the region’s diverse peoples together.
