About Czech Independence Day

Czech Independence Day, officially known as Independent Czechoslovak State Day, is celebrated each year on 28 October. It commemorates the founding of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, when the Czech and Slovak nations emerged from the collapsing Austro-Hungarian Empire to form a new democratic state. Today it is one of the Czech Republic’s most important public holidays, marked by official ceremonies, state honours and cultural events across the country.

The Story Behind Czech Independence Day

The roots of the day lie in the final weeks of the First World War. For centuries the Czech lands had been part of the Habsburg monarchy, and Czech national identity had grown steadily through the nineteenth century, accelerating sharply as the war exposed the fragility of the Austro-Hungarian arrangement. By the autumn of 1918, defeat for the empire was imminent.

On 28 October 1918, with news spreading of Austria-Hungary’s willingness to accept Allied peace terms, Czech politicians peacefully took control in Prague. That same day the National Committee issued the first law establishing an independent state, and the declaration of Czechoslovak independence was proclaimed on Wenceslas Square. The first Czechoslovak law was signed by five figures who became known as the “Men of 28 October”: Antonin Svehla, Alois Rasin, Jiri Stribrny, Vavro Srobar and Frantisek Soukup.

Behind the scenes, the new state owed much to a group of leaders working abroad. Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, Milan Rastislav Stefanik and Edvard Benes had established a provisional Czechoslovak government in Paris and negotiated international recognition from the Allied powers. Masaryk became the first President of Czechoslovakia, with Karel Kramar as its first Prime Minister.

Czechoslovakia endured through much of the twentieth century before the peaceful “Velvet Divorce” of 1993 split it into the modern Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic continues to honour 28 October as the anniversary of that original act of statehood, treating it as a cornerstone of national identity.
