About Intersex Awareness Day

Intersex Awareness Day takes place every year on 26 October. It is an international day of grassroots action that raises awareness of the issues faced by people born with intersex variations, and works to end shame, secrecy, and unwanted medical interventions performed on intersex children. The date marks the anniversary of the first public intersex demonstration in North America in 1996.

What is Intersex Awareness Day?

Intersex Awareness Day is observed on 26 October to highlight the experiences and human rights of intersex people, who are born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. These variations can involve chromosomes, hormones, gonads, or genital anatomy. The day is led by intersex-led organisations and allies who campaign for bodily autonomy, informed consent, and an end to non-consensual cosmetic surgeries on infants. It exists to replace stigma and silence with accurate information and dignity.

When is Intersex Awareness Day?

Intersex Awareness Day falls on Monday, 26 October 2026. The date is fixed and does not change from year to year, because it commemorates a specific historic protest that took place on 26 October 1996 in Boston. Many organisations also recognise Intersex Solidarity Day, also known as Intersex Day of Remembrance, on 8 November, which together with 26 October helps frame an extended period of intersex visibility each autumn.

Why Intersex Awareness Day Matters

Experts estimate that up to 1.7 per cent of people are born with intersex traits, a figure that translates into many millions of people worldwide. Despite these numbers, intersex people remain among the least understood groups within wider conversations about sex, gender, and human rights. Historically, medical professionals have pressured families to consent to surgeries on intersex infants and children to make their bodies appear more typical, even though these procedures are rarely medically necessary and can often be safely postponed until the person is old enough to make an informed decision themselves. The United Nations and human rights bodies have repeatedly called for an end to such non-consensual practices. Intersex Awareness Day matters because it gives intersex people a platform to share their own stories, challenge harmful myths, and push for legal and medical protections grounded in bodily autonomy and consent.

How to Get Involved in Intersex Awareness Day

There are many respectful and meaningful ways to mark the day, whether you are intersex yourself or an ally who wants to help.

  • Learn from intersex-led sources – Read and share material produced by intersex people and intersex-led organisations rather than second-hand summaries, so the conversation stays grounded in lived experience.
  • Correct misinformation – Intersex variations are natural and relatively common, so gently challenging myths when you encounter them helps reduce stigma.
  • Support advocacy organisations – Donating to or volunteering with intersex rights groups helps fund education, peer support, and legal campaigning.
  • Use accurate language – Saying “intersex” rather than outdated or clinical terms, and respecting how individuals describe themselves, shows basic dignity.
  • Raise the topic at work or school – Suggesting inclusive policies, training, or curriculum content helps build environments where intersex people feel safe.
  • Amplify intersex voices online – Sharing posts from intersex creators and campaigners on 26 October helps their messages reach a wider audience.
  • Advocate for bodily autonomy – Supporting calls to delay non-essential surgeries until a person can consent is one of the central goals of the movement.
  • Listen first – If someone tells you they are intersex, the most helpful response is often simply to listen without prying or making assumptions.

History of Intersex Awareness Day

The origins of Intersex Awareness Day lie in a single act of public protest. On 26 October 1996, intersex activists demonstrated outside the venue in Boston where the American Academy of Pediatrics was holding its annual conference. Among the protesters were Morgan Holmes and Max Beck of the Intersex Society of North America, joined by allies from the activist group Transsexual Menace, including Riki Wilchins. It was the first public demonstration by intersex people in North America, and the activists demanded that the medical profession stop performing non-consensual genital surgeries on intersex children.

The protest itself did not immediately create an annual observance. That came several years later. As the activist Betsy Driver learned more about the intersex community, she wanted a dedicated day to raise awareness. In 2003, she and fellow advocate Emi Koyama began discussing possible dates, and Koyama suggested 26 October to honour the anniversary of the Boston demonstration. Driver issued press releases marking 26 October 2004 as the first Intersex Awareness Day.

Since then the observance has grown from a grassroots idea into an international day recognised by advocacy networks, charities, and an increasing number of public institutions around the world. Each year more organisations use the date to publish research, host events, and call for legal protections, building on the momentum first generated by that 1996 protest.
