About Ecuador – Independence Day

Ecuador’s Independence Day is a national public holiday held every year on 10 August. Known in Spanish as El Primer Grito de la Independencia, the First Cry of Independence, it commemorates the events of 10 August 1809, when citizens of Quito formed a governing junta and challenged Spanish colonial rule. It is one of Ecuador’s most important national days and is marked with ceremonies, parades and celebrations across the country.

The Story Behind Ecuador’s Independence Day

The roots of the First Cry of Independence lie in events far from South America. In 1808, the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain and installed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, on the Spanish throne, imprisoning the legitimate King Ferdinand VII. The resulting power vacuum sent shockwaves through Spain’s colonies and emboldened those who longed for self-government.

In Quito, a group of criollo intellectuals, doctors, nobles and clergy began to plot. On the night of 9 August 1809 they gathered at the home of Manuela Cañizares, a prominent figure in the city’s political and literary circles. There they resolved to establish a Supreme Governing Junta, appointing Juan Pío Montúfar, the Marquis of Selva Alegre, to lead it, with Bishop José Cuero y Caicedo among the senior figures.

The following day, 10 August 1809, they signed a document setting out their commitment to a new form of government independent of the Spanish authorities then in place. The boldness of this act earned Quito the enduring nickname Luz de América, the Light of America, as it was among the earliest such declarations in Latin America.

The story did not end in triumph. The junta was short-lived, and on 2 August 1810 many of those involved were killed in a brutal crackdown by royalist forces. Their sacrifice, however, helped galvanise the wider independence movement. Full independence for the territory came only after the Battle of Pichincha on 24 May 1822, more than a decade later.
