Why National LGBT Center Awareness Day Matters
LGBTQ+ community centres are a lifeline for many people. Collectively, the centres in CenterLink’s network serve more than 40,000 people every single week, offering practical help and a sense of belonging that can be hard to find elsewhere. CenterLink supports a network of more than 250 member centres across the country, providing them with technical assistance, leadership training, and a national voice. For someone who is isolated, questioning their identity, or facing discrimination, a local centre can be the difference between feeling alone and finding a supportive community. By drawing national attention to these centres, the day helps secure the visibility, volunteers, and funding they need to keep their doors open.

History of National LGBT Center Awareness Day
The roots of the day lie in the broader community centre movement. In 1971, the first lesbian and gay community centres were established in Los Angeles, in Albany, California, and in New York, creating dedicated spaces for support and connection at a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights.
By 1987, leaders from community centres across the country had begun meeting at an annual conference, where they recognised the need for a central network to provide support and technical assistance to centres everywhere. That vision was realised in June 1994 with the launch of the National Association of LGBT Community Centers, timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.
That same year, in 1994, the organisation founded LGBT Center Awareness Day to bring national attention to the positive work of community centres. In 2008, the association was renamed CenterLink, and it has continued to grow into the leading voice for the community centre movement, now supporting a network of hundreds of centres nationwide.
